(Taimyr)

Taimyr Autonomous Okrug, Gubernatorial election . Results :

Alexander Khloponin, the director of the Norilsk Nickel plant, won 63 percent of the vote the January 28 gubernatorial election in the Taimyr region in northern Siberia, defeating incumbent Gennady Nedelin.

Karnataka state, First phase of polls to 147 civic bodies. Results : Not available.

Trinidad and Tobago

Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election. Results : The PNM, the major opposition party in Trinidad and Tobago, won eight of the 12 seats at stake. The National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), which had dominated the THA for 20 years and had held 10 seats in the last assembly, picked up only four seats. The United National Congress of Prime Minister Basdeo Panday which contested the Tobago poll for the first time failed to gain a seat. The People's Empowerment Party was also rejected by the voters.

Mauritania

In a cabinet reshuffle, Dah Ould Abdi is named foreign minister and Mahfoudh Ould Mohamed Ali finance minister.

Nauru

National Holiday : Independence Day (31 January 1968).

Nauru was visited in 1798 by the British and annexed in 1888 by Germany. Occupied during World War I by Australian forces, it was placed (1920) under a League of Nations mandate to Australia. Throughout World War II the island was occupied by the Japanese. Nauru was administered by Australia, Britain, and New Zealand under a UN trusteeship until 1968, when it became one of the world's smallest independent states.

Cape Verde

Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves of Cape Verde has named his cabinet. The move comes after his party won elections in the Atlantic Ocean Island state this month. Neves appointed seven ministers from his African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde and seven other independents to the cabinet.

Scott McCallum is sworn in as governor of Wisconsin, replacing Tommy Thompson, who on February 2 takes office as secretary of health and human services.

Foreign Minister José Vicente Rangel is designated to become defense minister. On February 4 Interior Minister Luis Alfonso Dávila is named foreign minister and Luis Miquilena interior minister.
