When the D.F.F 's arrival
on the Belgian political stage was proclaimed on
May 11,1964, many observers took it for granted
that it was a mere electoral vicissitude. In fact
they were underrating the French's capacity for
arousal following 1961and 62 Flemish demonstrations
in Brussels, and the 1962-63 baleful linguistic
legislation, as well as fanatical uproars from the
Femish speaking about the Louvain affair in
February 68.

Change
On October 24 ,1998, in
Wavre, the first General Assembly for CMC Citizens
approved the basic texts of the movement following
a pulic debate in which every citizen from Wallony
and Brussels was urged to participate and which
went on for months. The Citizens' Movement for
Change was thus no longer a mere movement for
ideas. The decision was made through a political
Motion passed on June 6, 1998 in Uccle. From now on
the CMC was a political movement.

"breaking the moulds of Irish politics and giving
