Romania

Local elections - 1st round. Peter Kovacs Eckstein of the Hungarian Democratic Federation of Romania, who placed second in the 4 June Cluj mayoral elections, has announced that he is withdrawing from the runoff against incumbent nationalist Mayor Gheorghe Funar. In the 4 June ballot, he received 21%. Funar received nearly 46 % backing and Democratic Convention of Romania candidate Serban Radulescu 11.5%.

Thailand

Senate election - 3rd round in for 12 seats in 9 provinces. The Election Commission decided late last night to order a fourth round of senate polling in four northeastern provinces on June 18. Advance voting for Maha Sarakham, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Nong Khai will be held on June 10-11. The commission also agreed unanimously to ban three winners: Prawat Thongsomboon of Maha Sarakham, Chairat Soda of Udon Thani and Sirirat Chuklin of Nong Khai from the June 18 contest.

Parliament approves Spasoje Tusevljak as prime minister.

Hungary

Ferenc Mádl is elected president in the third round of voting (243-96), after failing in two earlier rounds on June 5 and 6 to win the necessary two-thirds majority. He will take office August 4.

In a cabinet reshuffle, Mahawa Bangoura becomes foreign minister and Ahmadou Camara interior minister.

Parliament approves the new cabinet of Prime Minister Andrej Bajuk.
