Thailand

(Bangkok)

Bangkok, Gubernatorial election. Results : Samak Sundaravej's runaway victory, with a record 1,016,096 votes, in yesterday's Bangkok governor election is seen by political observers as a sign of voters' distrust of the Thai Rak Thai Party and rejection of the ruling Democrats. Thai Rak Thai's Sudarat Keyuraphan came in a distant second with 521,184 votes, and the Democrat's Thavatchai Sajakul third with 274,650.

Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast, Referendum on a new constitution. Government officials in Ivory Coast say results from a referendum held on Sunday show 86.53% of valid votes cast in favour. The turnover was of 56%.

Egypt

Anniversary of the Revolution (23 July 1952).

On July 23, 1952, the military, headed by Gen. Muhammad Naguib, took power by coup. Farouk abdicated in favor of his infant son, Ahmad Fuad II, but in 1953 the monarchy was abolished and a republic was declared.

Thailand

The East Asian Foreign Ministers will meet on the occasion of the 33rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and Post Ministerial Conferences from July 24 to 29. ASEAN is composed of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam. They will be joined by China, Japan and the Republic of Korea in the Thai capital. The United Nations Transitional Authority in East Timor (UNTAET) has been invited to attend the, opening ceremonies as guest of the host country.

Independence Day (26 July 1965 from UK).

After some popular protests against her British guides, July 26 1965 the country obtained the autonomy like country associated to the Commonwealth although giving England the possession of the base of Gan. In 1968, a referendum proclaimed the republic abolishing the sultanate and finally the 1995, it achieved the full independence.

Peru

Independence Day (28 July 1821 from Spain).

After he had ended Spanish rule in Chile in 1818, San Martín captured the Peruvian port of Pisco in 1820. Shortly thereafter the viceroy evacuated Lima, and on July 28, 1821, San Martín proclaimed the independence of Peru.
