Bolivia

National holiday : Independence Day (6 August 1825 from Spain)

Independence was won with the victory (1824) at Ayacucho of Antonio José de Sucre. After the formal proclamation of independence in 1825, Bolívar drew up (1826) a constitution for the new republic. The nation was named Bolivia, and Chuquisaca was renamed Sucre, after the revolutionary hero.

Jamaica

National holiday : Independence Day (6 August 1962 from UK1962) (first Monday in August)

Sir Alexander Bustamante led to a 1961 decision, by popular referendum, to withdraw from the federation. The following year Jamaica became an independent member of the Commonwealth.

Shlomo Ben-Ami, Minister of Public Security, named by Prime Minister, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs from Israel.

Cote d’Ivoire

 

National holiday : National Day (Independence 7 August 1960 from France)

In 1960, Côte d'Ivoire withdrew from the French Community and declared itself independent. The new republic joined the Organization of African Unity in 1963.

Chile

The Supreme Court of Chile confirmed the cancellation of General Pinochet's parliamentary immunity. Gen. Pinochet may hence be trialed for non elucidated crimes over the17 years dictatorship he led .

Singapore

National holiday : National Day (Independence 9 August 1965 from Malaysia)

Following a referendum (1962), Singapore merged (Aug., 1963) with Malaya, Sarawak, and Sabah to form the Federation of Malaysia. Frictions soon arose, however, and Singapore was, by mutual agreement, separated from the federation in Aug., 1965, becoming an independent republic.

Ecuador

National holiday : Independence Day (10 August 1809 independence of Quito)

There was an abortive uprising against Spain in 1809, and not until 1822 was the city liberated by Antonio José de Sucre.

Sri Lanka

Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike resigns. She is succeeded by Ratnasiri Wickremanayake.

Mauritius

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced fresh general elections in Mauritius 11 September, an hour after President Cassam Uteem dissolved the National Assembly. Three candidates are elected from each of the 20 constituencies of the island and two from the island of Rodrigues, a dependency of Mauritius. Eight best losers from the minority communities - Muslims and Christians - are also elected.

Cote d’Ivoire

Ivory Coast's military ruler General Robert Guei and the country's four main political parties have announced they will create a government of national unity - whatever the result of the forthcoming elections to restore civilian rule.

Chad

National holiday : Independence Day (11 August 1960 from France)

In the French constitutional referendum of 1958, Chad chose autonomy within the French Community. Full independence was attained on Aug. 11, 1960, with Ngarta Tombalbaye as the first president.
