Sri Lanka

President Chandrika Kumaratunga dissolved the Sri Lankan Parliament, six days before the end of its six-year term, and scheduled general elections for October, an official spokesman said. Government spokesman Ariya Rubasinghe gave no reason for the early end of the 225-member assembly. New elections will be held Oct. 10, he said.

Haiti

President Rene Preval on Wednesday made official the results of Haiti's May, June, and July elections, despite criticism from the international community that the results are questionable. The results published in the official state gazette, Le Moniteur, confirmed the overwhelming victory of the Fanmi Lavalas party of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, with 18 of 19 upper-house and 72 of 82 lower-house seats. The party also won about 80 percent of Haiti's 133 city halls.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's June parliamentary elections in Buhera North constituency where the leader of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai, stood showed that he had lost by an even wider margin to the candidate of the ruling party of President Robert Mugabe. Kenneth Manyonda polled 12,866 votes to Tsvangirai's 10,306.
