Macedonia

Local elections. The course of local elections in Macedonia was marred by violence and intimidation. Results : The governing coalition won 343,891 votes, while the opposition won 338,026 of the votes in 122 of 123 municipalities, according to the Nova Makedonija.

Hong Kong

Legislative Assembly elections. Results : Martin Lee's Democratic Party still emerged as the largest single group in the 60-seat Legislative Council, winning 12 seats, with 34.7%.of the votes. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, or DAB, won 11 votes, one more than it had before.

Mauritius

General elections. Results : the Militant Mauritian Movement (MMM) and its partner the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) won 54 of the 62 seats in parliament to only six for the Labour-dominated alliance. Some 81% of the 790,000 registered voters cast ballots. Two seats on offshore Rodrigues Island were taken by local parties who usually join the ruling coalition.

Canada

Federal byelections in Kings-Hants, Nova Scotia and Okanagan-Coquihalla, British Columbia. Results :

Kings Hants : victory of former Prime Minister Joe Clark from the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada with 14, 525 votes (53.4 %)

Okaganan-Coquihalla: victory of Day Stockwell's Canadian Reform Conservative Alliance with 19 419 votes (70.3%).

Lebanon

Outgoing prime minister of Lebanon, Salim al-Hoss, has called for Rafiq Hariri to succeed him. Mr Hariri, was also a former Lebanese prime minister

Nicaragua

Eduardo Montealegre resigned as Nicaragua's foreign affairs minister, raising speculation that he intends to contest next year's presidential elections.

Oman

Turnout was strong in Oman's parliamentary elections to choose from among 541 candidates &endash; including 21 women &endash; to elect 83 legislators for three-year terms. Oman have already elected two women to the advisory council one of them is Lujaina al Zuaabi . Results are expected.

Costa Rica

National holiday : Independence Day (15 September 1821, from Spain)

Costa Rica became independent from Spain in 1821. From 1822 to 1823 it was part of the Mexican Empire of Augustín de Iturbide. It then became part of the Central American Federation until 1838, when the sovereign republic of Costa Rica was proclaimed.

El Salvador

National holiday : Independence Day (15 September 1821 from Spain)

With independence from Spain in 1821, it became briefly a part of the Mexican Empire of Augustín de Iturbide, and after the empire collapsed (1823) El Salvador joined the Central American Federation to dissolution of the federation (1839).

Guatemala

National holiday : Independence Day (15 September 1821 from Spain)

Central America became independent from Spain in 1821. Guatemala was first a part of the Mexican Empire of Agustín de Iturbide and then became a nucleus of the Central American Federation. After the federation collapsed, Guatemala became a separate nation (1839).

In 1821, Honduras gained independence from Spain and became part of Iturbide's Mexican Empire; from 1825 to 1838 it was a member of the Central American Federation.

After declaring independence from Spain (1821), Nicaragua was briefly part of the Mexican Empire of Agustín de Iturbide and then (1825&endash;38) a member of the Central American Federation.

Mexico

National holiday : Independence Day (16 September 1810 from Spain)

The establishment of the United States and the ideas of the French Revolution had considerable influence on Mexicans. The occupation (1808) of Spain by Napoleon I, who placed his brother Joseph Bonaparte on the Spanish throne, opened the way for a revolt in Mexico. The priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla began the rebellion by issuing (Sept. 16, 1810) the Grito de Dolores [cry of Pains], a revolutionary tract calling for racial equality and the redistribution of land. Armies, made up mostly of mestizos and natives and shunned by the creoles, sprang up under the command of Ignacio Allende, José María Morelos y Pavón, Vicente Guerrero, and Mariano Matamoros.

Papua

New Guinea

National holiday : Independence Day (16 September 1975 from the Australian-administered UN trusteeship)

In 1949, the territories of Papua and New Guinea were merged administratively, but they remained constitutionally distinct. They were combined in 1973 as the self-governing country of Papua New Guinea. Full independence was gained in 1975.
