In parliamentary elections, the Dominica Labor Party led by Rosie Douglas wins 10 of 21 seats, the United Workers' Party of Prime Minister Edison James 9, and the Dominica Freedom Party 2. Turnout is 59.3%.

United Kingdom

(Wales)

Plaid Cymru wins a by-election in Ceredigion, Wales. In a parliamentary by election. Plaid Cymru's Simon Thomas easily defended his party's Ceredigion seat in west Wales, polling 10,716 votes from a turnout of 46%. The battle for second place was won by Liberal Democrat candidate Mark Williams who polled 5,768. The Tories' Paul Davies took third place with 4,138 and Labour's Maria Battle trailed into fourth place with 3,612.

Wolfgang Schüssel (ÖVP) is sworn in as chancellor. Benita Ferrero-Waldner (ÖVP) becomes foreign minister, Ernst Strasser (ÖVP) interior minister, Herbert Scheibner (FPÖ) defense minister, and Karl-Heinz Grasser (FPÖ) finance minister.
