Gubernatorial election. Results : In gubernatorial elections, Sila María Calderón (Popular Democratic Party) wins 48.5% of the vote, Carlos I. Pesquera (New Progressive Party) 45.7%, and Rubén Berríos Martínez (Independence Party) 5.2%. Turnout is 81.8%.

Paramanga Ernest Yonli becomes prime minister.

Egypt

Parliamentary elections-stage three. Results : National Democratic Party (Mubarak's party) had consolidated its majority with 23 more seats, and 101 of its candidates would take part in Monday's run-off. None of the 22 independent candidates backed by the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood won a seat on Wednesday, but seven received enough votes to qualify for the run-off. Two opposition candidates won seats.Brotherhood candidates won 15 seats

Cayman Islands

Parliamentary elections. Results : Voters ousted the leader of the Cayman Islands Truman Bodden and two of his ministers. The leader of the government who was also planning minister, lost his seat in general elections. Also ousted was Tourism Minister Thomas Jefferson. Another loser was Agriculture and Communications Minister John McLean Sr., who had served 24 years in the legislature. In all, seven new legislators were elected and eight incumbents held onto their seats. Five incumbents lost their seats and two retired. More than 80 percent of voters participated.

Cambodia

National holiday : Independence Day (9 November 1953, from France)

In Jan., 1946, France granted Cambodia self-government within the French Union; a constitution was promulgated in May, 1947. A treaty signed in 1949 raised the country's status to that of an associated state in the French Union, but limitations on the country's sovereignty persisted. King Norodom Sihanouk campaigned for complete independence, which was finally granted in 1953.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

 

Parliamentary elections. Results : OSCE partial premiminary figures gave the Serb Democratic Party a lead in the Serb republic and the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) a lead in the Muslim-Croat federation in parliamentary polls for each of the two entities and the joint state assembly.

The Muslim nationalist SDA came second in the federation, ahead of the multi-ethnic Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Two Houses were elected besides Parliament in the Central State. Election in the Croato-Bosnian Federation : those in the Muslim-Croat Federation selected officials of 10 regional cantons. Results : HDZ party in the lead, according to preliminary partial figures.

Election in the Bosnian Serb Republic.Bosnian Serbs also voted for a president and vice president of their half of Bosnia. Results : The OSCE figures put the nationalist Serb Democratic Party (SDS) ahead in the Serb republic and early returns showed Mirko Sarovic of SDP far ahead of Western-backed Prime Minister Milorad Dodik in the presidential race.

A final vote count in the general election is not expected before Friday.

Slovakia

Referendum on early elections. Results : Slovakia's opposition-backed referendum aimed at ousting the government of Premier Mikulas Dzurinda, has failed because turnout was too low, voting officials say. The result of a campaign led by former populist prime minister Vladimir Meciar, attracted only 20 percent of eligible voters out of the 50 percent required for a quorum.

Angola

National holiday : Independence Day (11 November 1975, from Portugal)

Portugal granted Angola independence in 1975 and the MPLA assumed control of the government in Luanda ; Agostinho Neto became president. The FNLA and UNITA, however, proclaimed a coaliton government in Nova Lisboa (now Huambo), but by early 1976 the MPLA had gained control of the whole country. Most of the European population fled the political and economic upheaval that followed independence, taking their investments and technical expertise with them.

Poland

National holiday : Independence Day (11 November 1918, independent republic proclaimed)

In Nov., 1916, Germany and Austria proclaimed Poland an independent kingdom, but Germany, which occupied the country, retained control over the Polish government. Pilsudski resigned and was imprisoned (July, 1917), and the independence movement from then on was centered at Paris. The defeat of the partitioning powers allowed Poland to regain its independence, which was proclaimed on Nov. 9, 1918. Pilsudski returned on Nov. 10 and was declared chief of state.
